On July 16th, 2024, eight climate activists, alongside several members, lawyers, and partnering organizations, including the Africa Institute for Energy Governance (AFIEGO), addressed a press conference to announce the filing of a lawsuit against the Attorney General and ten police officers from the Uganda Police. The lawsuit addresses the harassment of supporters involved in peaceful protest marches organized at the Parliament of Uganda, the European Union Embassy in Kampala, and the Chinese Embassy in Kampala. During these protests, many supporters were violently arrested and detained at Jinja Road Police Station and the Central Police Station.
These legal actions underscore the urgent need to restore the right to peaceful protest and assembly, aiming to prevent further incidents of police brutality and regime torture against peaceful Anti-EACOP protestors. The activists and their partners remain steadfast in their commitment to defending their rights and advocating for a just and sustainable future.
